World Hearing Day: Hearing Care For Every Child

World Hearing Day draws attention to one of the most overlooked public health challenges — childhood hearing loss. In many cases, hearing impairment goes undetected until speech delays become visible, by which time critical developmental windows may already have narrowed. The World Health Organisation estimates that a large proportion of childhood hearing loss is preventable through vaccination, infection control, safe childbirth practices and early screening. Yet in Nigeria, universal newborn hearing screening is not standard practice. Audiology services remain concentrated in major cities, while hearing aids, cochlear implants, and therapy services are financially out of reach for many families. Untreated hearing loss can affect language development, literacy, classroom participation and long-term employability. We examine the implications and the urgent need for early intervention with Tshiwela Mulondo, Speech Therapist and Audiologist at Orel Therapy Centre.
