In this lecture, we study Joule (Free) Expansion, a fundamental concept in thermodynamics that plays a key role in understanding the behavior of ideal and real gases. We begin with the Joule expansion experiment, where a gas expands freely into a vacuum without doing external work and without heat exchange. Using this process, we introduce the Joule coefficient and analyze how temperature changes during free expansion. The lecture clearly explains: • Joule (free) expansion and its physical interpretation • Joule coefficient and its definition • Why the Joule coefficient is zero for an ideal gas • Temperature behavior during free expansion • Joule coefficient for real gases • Deviation of real gases from ideal behavior • Thermodynamic significance of Joule expansion This topic is extremely important for understanding real gas behavior and is frequently asked in IIT-JAM, CSIR-NET, GATE, JEST, TIFR, and UPSC Physics Optional. It is also a core part of the BSc and MSc Physics thermodynamics syllabus.
