Christopher Fuller is an historian at the University of Southampton, currently researching the United States' use of unmanned 'drones' in their conflict with al-Qaeda, tracking this technology and policy back to its origins in the 1980s. Since September 11, 2001, the West has been engaged in a "war on terror", using lethal military force to counter the threat of non-state terrorism posed by groups such as al-Qaeda and their affiliates. But what does the future of this conflict look like? Are we resigned to a lifetime of perpetual conflict overseas and strict security at home, or is there an achievable end point? This talk contemplates how the "war on terror" ends, and how the post-9/11 world returns to normality. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
