According to local belief, the rain that begins after the river's creatures are caught (or killed) becomes the essential water source for the rice fields. During the festival, a natural intoxicant is extracted from the roots of specific trees and dissolved into the river water. Once the water becomes medicated, the fish become unconscious or "intoxicated," making them very easy to catch.
