I'm a little embarrassed to be uploading this one because, well, it turned into a little bit of a rout. After my delight with the Sonoma Distilling lineup ( • Surprises Are Nice: Sonoma Distilling Samp... ), which has never really picked up much love in the nerd communities, I was pretty excited to try and review this cool little cube-shaped quad pack from Laws (formerly A.D. Laws) in Colorado, much more beloved by the nerds. On paper the stats look good. Everything marked "straight" at minimum? Check. Heirloom grains from local farms? Check. Proper 200-liter barrels? Check. Everything pot distilled? Err, no, but that's okay! So I was all set up to be delighted by another string of terroir-driven, distillate-forward whiskies. And I kind of got that. But, well... Laws Whiskey House Four Grain Straight Bourbon (Denver; 60% corn, 20% heirloom wheat, 10% heirloom rye, 10% malted heirloom barley; 47.5% ABV), 81/100 Laws Whiskey House San Luis Valley Straight Rye (Denver; 100% heirloom rye; 47.5% ABV), 71/100 Laws Whiskey House Henry Road Straight Malt Whiskey (Denver; 100% malted heirloom barley ; 47.5% ABV), 83/100 Laws Whiskey House Centennial Straight Wheat Whiskey (Denver; 100% "Soft White Centennial Spring Wheat"; 47.5% ABV), 82/100 There is indeed lots going on in these whiskeys - the pepper, the aggressive floral elements, the green notes - but rather than ending up in the primordial elemental balance of something like the Sonoma line, these seem like a little bit of a mess. The rye in particular... well, witness my literal wincing. Do I like (or at least admire) them more than the Journeyman lineup ( • Journeyman Whiskey Sample Pack (plus Corse... ), say? Absolutely. There's something here, and maybe the older releases more artfully show what that is. Here, though, even though most other reviewers seems to find the malter and wheater a bit bland, they were actually my winners in this comparo. Can I recommend these four, especially given where the pricing is? Not really. Worth grabbing the four-pack anyhow for fun? Yes. Worth watching? Yes, absolutely.
