Stillness Reveals Beauty - A Grizzly Morning in the High Country

This is an early morning May hike in the Yellowstone ecosystem high country. Before the day begins and while the world is still quiet, the birds are singing, the air is cool, and the first orange light of sunrise glows off to the east. As I hike through this stillness, elk appear on a distant ridge, their shapes outlined against the rising sun. A fresh grizzly track in the mud reminds me that this land is alive with grizzlies. I find a quiet place to sit for a couple of hours and let the morning unfold: a moose below, a beaver at work, fog lifting to reveal a grizzly peacefully digging on a hillside. Later, I move to a new area. Creeks run clear between stands of lodgepole, and elk, deer, and a lone grouse appear as the day warms. The morning ends with a Clark’s Nutcracker perched high above it all—a fitting reminder of why I come out here. It is beautiful.
