A lecture by Dr. Aryeh Bornstein on behalf of the company Tagliot Archaeological Tours. 📜 The Tel Dan inscription is one of the most fascinating archaeological discoveries discovered in Israel! The inscription, which was discovered in 1994, describes the victory of King Hazael of Aram over the kings of Israel and Judah - Yehoram ben Ahab and Ahaziah ben Yehoram. It includes the first extra-biblical mention of the **"House of David"**, which made it one of the most important inscriptions for understanding the history of the biblical period. 🔍 Did Hazael really kill the kings of Israel and Judah, or did he simply appropriate victories that were not his? 📖 How does all this line up with the Bible? 🧐 What are the five main explanations for the gaps between the Bible and the address? Join us for a fascinating lecture where we will explore the inscription, understand its meaning, and dive deep into the historical and linguistic controversy! ⏳ Chapter Breakdown by Time: 00:04 - The historical background: Hazael, king of Aram and his wars in Israel 00:20 - Tel Dan address - what does it tell us? 02:22 - The five explanations for the gap between the Bible and the inscription - Who killed Jehoram and Ahaziah? 04:43 - Shalmaneser III, king of Assyria - another example of a gap between two inscriptions 📌 Don't forget to subscribe to the channel and give a like! Explanation of persons and addresses: 📖 Hazael king of Aram He was the ruler of Aram Damascus during the 9th century BC. Hazael came to power after killing Ben-Hadad II, the king of Aram who preceded him, as described in the Bible (2 Kings 8:7-15). He took advantage of the weakness of the kings of Israel and Judah after the death of Ahab, and began conducting heavy military raids on their territories. 🔍 The connection to the killing of Ahaziah king of Judah and Jehoram king of Israel These events took place in the context of the rebellion of Jehu ben Nemshi, who was anointed by the prophet Elisha at God's command to overthrow the house of Ahab (2 Kings 9). Jehu became king over Israel after killing Jehoram, son of Ahab and brother of Ahaziah. • Jehoram, King of Israel Jehoram (Joram) King of Israel was wounded in battle against Hazael King of Aram in Ramot Gilead (2 Kings 8:28-29). Due to his injury, he retreated to Jezreel to recover. • Ahaziah King of Judah Ahaziah, King of Judah and Jehoram's nephew, came to visit him in Israel. At that time, Jehu set out to rebel against the house of Ahab and quickly arrived in Jezreel. When Ahaziah saw what was happening, he tried to escape, but Jehu chased him and wounded him. Ahaziah managed to reach Megiddo, but there he died of his wounds (2 Kings 9:27). 🔍 Hazal's role in these struggles Hazael himself was not directly involved in the killing of Yehoram and Ahaziah, but he was the main enemy of Israel during this period. The battle in Ramot Gilead, in which Yoram was wounded, was part of Hazal's ongoing struggle against Israel. The military pressure that Hazael exerted on Israel and Judah weakened both kingdoms, which allowed Jehu to carry out his military coup and overthrow the dynasty of Ahab. 🔍 Yehu's rise to power Jehu was initially a minister in the army of Jehoram, King of Israel. The prophet Elisha sent a messenger to his king by God's order to overthrow the house of Ahab, because of his sins and especially because of the worship of Baal that Queen Jezebel led (2 Kings 9). 🔍 Jehu's rebellion and the fall of Ahab's house After being praised by his men, Yehu went on a brutal campaign of extermination: • Killed Jehoram, King of Israel in the Jezreel Valley. • Pursued King Ahaziah of Judah and killed him. • Executed Jezebel, Ahab's wife, by throwing her from the window of the Armona in Israel. • Killed all the members of Ahab's house, including 70 of Ahab's descendants in Samaria. • He destroyed the prophets of Baal and destroyed the worship of Baal in Israel. 📖 Beit David address An Aramaic inscription from the 9th century BC, discovered in Tel Dan in northern Israel in 1993. The inscription is engraved on a basalt stone slab and written in Aramaic in Phoenician script. The content of the address The inscription describes the victory of King Hazael of Aram over the kings of Israel and Judah. It refers to the death of Jehoram King of Israel and Ahaziah King of Judah. The gap between the address and the Bible: The inscription attributes the killing of Yehoram and Ahaziah to Hazael, while the Bible describes that Yehua ben Namshi was the one who killed them. One of the hypotheses is that Hazael tried to take credit for their deaths, or that the Aramaic word "Katalit" (I killed) can also be interpreted as "I wounded".
