The Serra de Montemuro is the eighth highest elevation in mainland Portugal, with 1382 meters of altitude. It is located in the municipalities of Arouca (district of Aveiro), Cinfães, Resende, Castro Daire and Lamego (district of Viseu) and between the Douro Litoral and Beira Alta regions Serra de Montemuro is part of the 1st phase of the national list of sites in the Natura 2000 network. It is classified as BIOTOPO CORINE, with the designation of Serra do Montemuro/Bigorn. The highest point in the mountain range is called Talegre or Talefe, at 1,381 meters above sea level. The entire mountain range has a lot of relief and is steep practically on all sides. The mountain is populated up to around 1,100 meters in altitude, the villages are spread across the entire mountain range, but almost always close to water courses, such as the Bestança river that divides it in the south-north direction. It lies between the valleys of the River Douro and the River Paiva, separating the Douro Litoral and Beira Alta regions with its average altitude of 838m and its austere rocky appearance.
