The Lake Shasta Caverns were officially discovered in 1878 and were opened to the public in 1964. Tours are offered year round and take about 2 hours. Descending from the gift shop visitors board a boat to cross Lake Shasta which was formed after construction of the Shasta Dam block the flow of the Sacramento River. Then board a bus for a quick ride 900 feet up the mountain to the cavern entrance learning a little bit about local history along the way.
