In this episode, I head to Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia and the capital of East Java, to explore what makes it so special — and ask the big question: is it better than Jakarta? I dive straight into the local food scene by trying two East Javanese specialties — rujak cingur, a bold and unique fruit and vegetable salad with cow snout, and rawon, a rich black beef soup that’s full of deep, earthy flavor. Both dishes are packed with taste and completely different from anything I’ve tried before. Along the way, I visit the massive Al-Akbar Mosque, the second largest mosque in Indonesia. I also stop by Surabaya Zoo, one of the oldest in the country, and explore the stunning Cheng Hoo Mosque, which beautifully blends Chinese and Islamic architecture. As night falls, I walk through the lively streets of Surabaya, soaking up the local vibe and sampling delicious street food.
