While some 8,000 satellites were launched during the first 60 years of space history, between 1957 and 2017, over 11,000 have been launched since 2020. There is 10,000 active satellites in 2025, 5 times more than in 2018. This new dynamic is largely due to the construction of small, low-cost, high-performance satellites for Internet traffic. At the same time, the proliferation of debris has become one of the major challenges to the continuation of space activities, with the smallest pieces of debris, just a few centimeters in size, being capable of directly destroying any satellite encountered on its trajectory. All this is pleading for better coordination between the key actors to prevent collisions between satellites or with debris, allowing a safer space environment for all. The space sector is highly technical and requires the use of standards at every stage of the value chain involving national, European and international standardization bodies to adopt best practices, with a key role of governments at the UN or at other levels to help foster this global coordination. Recent contacts between the Chinese and U.S. space agencies relative to operational anti-collision cases may be considered as a first positive sign in that direction. The webinar involved two leading experts with academic and practical experience who discussed the current state of US and EU thinking on the issue, while possibly drawing a pathway for a sustainable governance for space.
