No voice over for this video. Seacliff Lunatic Asylum has featured in one of my videos before, and I wanted to visit this site. I would say, it was very tranquil, and a great peaceful tribute to those who lost their lives - 37 female patients. The cause of the fire is unknown. The buildings were completed in 1884 and it sure did look majestic (my opinion) - but, it was riddled with structural issues. After the fire, the site was demolished around 10 years later. The only positive legacy is that safety standards were massively improved. There is a lot of mystery about this site, as it has been rumoured that mistreatment was common here... violence, lobotomy, electro therapy... Sir Truby King was the medical superintendent and introduced reforms such as fresh air, good diet, excursive. He founded the Plunket Society here (health and wellbeing, pretty forward thinking) and his gardens pay tribute. It was a good visit, and very peaceful. I couldn't imagine what the 220m+ asylum would have looked like! Would have been one of the most grandeur buildings in NZ. Cheers!
