The doctors are protesting against the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata. The IMA has announced the withdrawal of non-emergency medical services. However, the service for emergency and casualty departments will remain functional during the strike. The IMA has put forth five demands, including a swift probe and exemplary punishment for the culprits. On August 16, doctors across cities carried protest marches. The Kolkata rape and murder case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
