Bruno Vlahek: Fotonal, Op. 61 for brač solo live performance by Martin Marijanović Fotonal was composed on the initiative and commission of Martin Marijanović, to whom the piece is also dedicated. The idea behind the work was to create a striking and virtuosic composition that presents brač - a traditional Croatian instrument from the tambura family - in a somewhat different light—showcasing its diverse expressive and technical capabilities beyond its traditional associations. The title Fotonal is derived from the word photon, the Greek term for “light” (φῶς, φωτός) and the name for the fundamental particle of light. Just as photons represent the essence of light in physics, the piece is built around a kind of sonic nucleus: the tone A. This note acts as an obsessive focal point, generating a rhythmic, almost rock-like drive that gradually expands and transforms throughout the work. With few elements of extended performance techniques, Fotonal demands energy, dexterity, and stamina. It is written for a dynamic performer who is willing to push the boundaries of the tambura—infusing it with intensity, unpredictability, and a contemporary musical voice.
