(15 Dec 2020) LEAD IN: Concept cars by the famous Bertone design studio are on display at Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art in St. Petersburg, Russia. The exhibition showcases six Bertone concept cars from different years. STORY-LINE: With gullwing doors wide open, the Porsche Karisma gives the appearance of a large-winged bird. Inspired by Bertone's work with the Porsche 911, the sliding doors make it easy for the driver to get into the car. At the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art in St. Petersburg, six concept cars created by the Bertone studio design are on display. "These are concept cars, these are like haute couture clothes, that belong to the high fashion of automobiles and are not produced as serial cars. Therefore, we here not paying much attention to the technical parameters of vehicles, not their ability to drive for 300 km per hour, but this exhibition is more about colour, search for the forms, about the evolution of lines," says Pavel Markaitis, a representative of the museum in Russia. The designs were created by legendary Nuccio Bertone, automobile designer and constructor who took over after his father, expanding the business into a world famous brand. Bertone's automobile company collaborated with leading automobile manufacturers such as Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Fiat, Lamborghini and Mercedes Benz. This Chevrolet Corvette Ramarro has engine cooling radiators at the rear of the car, making the body shorter and improving the car's aerodynamics. "This (Bertone Ramarro) is the car of the 80s and it is the meeting of the US automobile world or automobile nation with Italian design. This is how atelier Bertone looked at the classic US (cars). It is their interpretation of Chevrolet and is inspired by the desert, by the endless road which cars are crossing spaces at a high speed," says Markaitis. Drawings of the car models, as well as photos showing the evolution of car design, are also showcased at the exhibition. The sketches and photographs trace the Italian automotive design in the 20th century. "I love exhibitions of concept cars because here you can see something new and unusual, because modern cars are very much alike. While here you can see, even if it does not exist in reality, very interesting cars and interesting decisions by designers," explains visitor Dmitry Malkovich. The Alfa Romeo Bella, the Lotus Emotion, the Karisma, the Chevrolet Corvette Ramarro, the Cadillac Villa, and the Birusa vehicle on display were not intended for mass production. "For our roads, it is impossible to have such designs, but it is what we should strive for and improve our taste, but I do not think that cars like this will appear on our roads for at least next 50 years," says visitor Natalya Ashenberer. "What impresses me the most, is how the brain of a human-being works, that he can imagine all these and implement what we are seeing here today," says visitor Oleg Maklakov. The exhibition at the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art will run from December 11 until 11 April 2021.
