(25 Feb 1995) Natural Sound Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in Rome to protest over what they say is the growing number of racist attacks in the Italian capital. The protest was triggered by an attack on a pregnant Somali who was said to have been kicked and beaten on a bus while other passengers did nothing to help her. Busses had been chartered from all over Italy to bring the protestors to Rome for the protest against racism. Police estimated the turnout to be around 10-thousand. The demonstration was organised by Italy's three main unions and held in Rome's Piazza della Republica, drawing some 10-thousand protestors, mainly migrant workers. It was a noisy but peaceful crowd, many of whom were African in origin. The march began near the train station and snaked towards the appropriately named Pizza del Populo. The demonstration was a reaction to last Wednesday night's attack on a seven-months pregnant Somali. The woman was set on by four youths as she travelled on a bus in Ostia, a seaside town near Rome's airport and home to many immigrants. Newspapers have reported an increase in racist attacks in recent months. Today, the emphasis was on racial solidarity. A group of jazz musicians added to the festive atmosphere. The only sour note was a small group of neo-Nazis who were asked by police to furl up their banner which had the word "Skinheads" provocatively emblazoned across it. Officers then told them leave. Race is an emotive political issue here. Last month an Italian research group reported the number of foreigners rose to a record one and a half per cent of the 56 (m) million population. However this figure does not reflect hundreds of thousands of immigrants believed to be living illegally in Italy. Leaders of the demonstration called on the government to grant work permits to immigrants who currently enter the country secretly for seasonal work. Permit holders would then be in the country legally and have the full protection of the law.
