The data encoded in the code is the start-character (an asterisk *), the digit 1 and a stop character (again an asterisk). The manually "generated" barcode is then decoded with a smartphone. If you try to decode the barcode with a camera scanner app please make sure the barcode symbology in question is supported by the App. ZXing is free and can be downloaded from Android market.
