"Song of Aiche" Recorded in England Musc by Noel Johnson (1863-1916) Words by Nancie B. Marsland (May 21, 1893 — April 8, 1968). Her full name was Nancie Brenda Marsland. Bettina Freeman is a forgotten opera singer. She was born in Boston around 1889 (the year Benjamin Harrison entered the White House). She made Columbia recordings in the United States and later in England. Columbia discs made in the U.S. identify her as a mezzo (one exception?), but she later covered soprano roles. It seems she started her career in 1909 as a mezzo soprano (and made all but one of her American-made records as a mezzo) but then underwent re-studying or re-training as a dramatic soprano. Records made in England identify her as a soprano. She probably retired in the late 1920s--or at least I can find no information about her career beyond the 1920s.
