The Relationship between Islam and Mental Health (Part 1)

The Relationship between Islam and Mental Health (Part 1) The Connection between Faith and Mental Health A multifactorial approach believes that an individual's mental health is significantly influenced by biopsychosocial-spiritual factors. The three basic principles in the Mental Health Movement are: the principle of human nature, the principle of human relationships with the environment, and the principle of human relationships with God. (Dewi, 2012) Thus, it cannot be denied that a person's belief in God is among the factors that can influence mental health. Scientific research also shows that there is indeed a connection between faith and mental health. Research conducted in the United States indicates that faith has a positive relationship with mental health. For example, a study conducted in 2005 on adults in the San Francisco Bay area found that religion could be a deterrent to depression in people experiencing poor mental health, and most people with poor mental health did not have a religion. Additionally, a study conducted in 2013 showed that people undergoing therapy for mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, responded well when they believed in God. Furthermore, a study in 1993 by Dr. Harold G. Koenig, Director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center, found that people with a good level of spirituality had fewer symptoms of depression. (Rettner, 2015) Islam and Mental Health There are three words in the Quran that have meanings closely related to depression. Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, stated in his book "Fawaidul Fawaid" that these are Huzn (الحزن), Ghamm (الغم), and Hamm (الهم), all of which are contrary to life and the tranquility of the heart. Therefore, the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, prayed for all of these to be removed through the Quran, so that sorrow would not return. Because if sorrow is removed by anything other than the Quran, such as physical health, worldly matters, position, wife, or children, the sorrow will return once all of these are gone. There are three things that the heart dislikes or fears. If the fear is related to the past, it will result in huzn (sadness). If it is related to the future, it will produce hamm (anxiety). And if it is related to the present, it will bring about gham (distress). Therefore, a servant should ask their Lord to remove all of these so that their heart is cleansed, whether from past, present, or future matters. Every Disease Has a Cure, Including Mental Illness From Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: ما أنزل الله داء إلا أنزل له شفاء "Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has also sent down its cure." (Narrated by Bukhari) This evidence encompasses all diseases found in the heart, soul, and body. It also includes the cure for each of these diseases. There is a hadith narrated by Imam Abu Dawood where the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, stated that ignorance is a disease and its cure is to ask the scholars. Allah the Exalted says: وننزل من القرآن ما هو شفاء ورحمة للمؤمنين And I reveal in the Qur'an that which cures the hearts of ignorance, disbelief and doubt, cures the bodies when treated through it, and that which is a mercy for the believers who practice it. And this Qur'an only increases the disbelievers in destruction, as listening to it angers them and makes them deny and turn away from it even more. (Surah Al-Isra Ayat 82) The Quran is both a mercy and a healing. It is a healing for the heart from the diseases of ignorance, doubt, and uncertainty. Allah has never sent down a remedy from the heavens that is more beneficial, more comprehensive, or more effective in removing disease than the Quran. Author: Triani Pradinaputri
