RECORDINGS FROM SADO ISLAND Ⲷ𒊹Ⲷ KENTA NAKAGOME + SHOGO KOMATSUZAKI Ⲷ𒊹Ⲷ filmed by Vincent Moon in Kodo Village, Sado Island, Japan, october 2025 It was a few years ago, in Paris— the Théâtre du Châtelet was hosting the Japanese taiko ensemble Kodo. I was seated high above the stage, and like a spellbound child I let myself be carried away by the earth-shaking power of the legendary drummers from Sado Island. That island echoed not only in my mind— whenever I spoke its name to my friends in Japan, their eyes would lift toward the sky, their ears seemed to stir with rolling drums. Sado is a mythical territory, a weave of stories, a sound unlike any other in Japan. I was invited there at the last moment, through Yoyo’s mysterious intervention— a curious sleight of destiny that plunged me into forty-eight hours of immersion in the island’s culture, off the coast of Niigata. It all began on the first morning with an improvised exchange between Kenta and Shogo, two of the company’s performers, inside the great historic hall of Kodo, where we spun and spun, barely stopping. This single sequence opens a series of films shot on Sado that I will be sharing in the coming days.
