Cyclops TIME – 5pm SCENE – Tavern – Barney Kiernans Pub on Little Britain St. COLOUR – Green TECHNIQUE – Gigantism CORRESPONDENCES – I – Noman Cigar – Stake Apotheosis - Challenge SCIENCE / ART – Surgery MEANING – The Egocidal Terror ORGAN – Muscles, Bone SYMBOLS – Nation, Religion, Gymnastics, Idealism, Exaggeration, Fanaticism, Collectivity OTHER CHARACTERS – The Citizen and his dog Garryowen, Joe, Alf, Bob Doran, Ned Lambert, JJ Molloy, and others besides PLOT – I was just passing the time of day with old Troy of the D.M.P. at the corner of Arbor Hill there, and bedamned but a bloody sweep came along, and he near drove his gear into my eye. The pub, and the men are commiserating over their losses in the Gold Cup, as 20-1 outsider, Throwaway comes home. Bloom comes looking for Martin Cunningham to discuss the Dignam business. He comes to Barney Kiernan’s to find him. The men of the pub offer Bloom a drink, which he refuses in favor of a cigar, and in due course, the sly taunting about his wife’s affair, and his Jewishness mounts, as does envy of his win at the races: remember how in Lotus Eaters, he “gave Lyons a good tip”?. Eventually, he becomes locked into a tussle with the resident one eyed hero, the Citizen, on the matter of nationalism, and being Jewish, he wins each round fairly handily, on intellectual terms, and has Martin Cunningham expedite his departure as the Citizen launches a biscuit box after him, and his dog Garryowen too. ODDS & ENDS In this chapter, it is all about the telling of the story. The nameless narrator slips back and forth between a very conversational pub patter littered with the colloquial and commonplace chatter, and the language and style of the Epic, as is appropriate to tell a tale of great heroes. The supposed generosity of the men of the pub before turning on Bloom is a fairly even balance to the story in the Odyssey, where the Cyclops, Polyphemus traps Odysseus and his men. Eventually, when asked his name, Odysseus replies “Nobody” so when he is stabbed in the eye, the Cyclops calls for help by asking to be saved from Nobody. Bloom is in many ways the original anti-hero of literature, while The Citizen, with his bluster is practically a parody of nationalist heroism. All is the green of Ireland or nothing at all to his mind. It should be noted that this great outpost of nationalism is located on Little Britain street. This fervent nationalism is closely aligned with xenophobia and racism, as Bloom is treated as less, and considered as less being Jewish, and while he speaks up about the persecution of the Jews being equal or perhaps greater than that of the Irish, they throw further racist epithets at him, specifically the one used in South Africa. Ultimately these are unpleasant people with a drop taken, and while Martin Cunningham is generally a good guy, he does respond to their guff. Asked about Bloom’s background, he responds to the mob, saying he is a “perverted Jew”. In this case, it theoretically means he is Jewish in the Irish sense – male children of mixed marriages were expected to be brought up in the father’s faith, the girls in their mother’s – however, we learn in Ithaca that Bloom was baptised in a protestant church, his father having converted to a protestant faith on arriving in Ireland, as well as changing his name from Virag to Bloom. Beyond that, Bloom converted to Catholicism to marry Molly. Nation in this limited sense, as well as religion in a similarly limited sense, means nothing to Bloom, as his is a gospel and a nation of Love.
