We are a coco-based potting soil based out of Humboldt County, California. We’ve been in business for about 10 years. All of our soils are coco-fiber based. We have no peat moss in any of our mixes. It’s something we feel really good about. Coco is a more sustainable product. Coconut is formed on the ground everyday while peat takes hundreds of years to form. Here in Canada, I know that our traditional peat-based potting soil is especially popular. If you want to use coco fiber as a conditioner, that’s a great way it can be used. You’re going to add aeration. You’re going to keep it nice and loose. It’s going to be able to breathe better. Traditional potting soil that contains peat typically bogs down. When it dries out, it hardens, shrinks away from the pot. If you were to add coco fiber, it’s going to add that aeration. It’s going to keep it nice and loose. One of the advantages of coco fiber is that it doesn’t break down like a traditional peat moss growth medium. Peat degrades fast and you’re constantly either having to top it off or use new soil, replace it with new soil where because of the high lignin content of coco fiber, it remains spongy. It bounces back and it doesn’t degrade at the same level, so you can constantly reuse coco fiber. We have customers that reuse it up to four or five times.
