(2 Mar 2000) Portuguese/Nat STORY: RIO CARNIVAL LOCATION: RIO DE Janeiro DATE; 1 MARCH 2000 Preparations for the world's greatest annual party, the legendary Rio Carnival, are hotting up. The Carnival's theme this year is the 500 year anniversary of the discovery of Brazil. Hundreds of thousands of revellers will dance in the streets of Rio de Janeiro led by fourteen Samba schools whose hundreds of dancers are putting the final touches to their sexy moves in anticipation of the main carnival parade on Sunday. At the SCHOOL OF SAMBA in Duque de Caxias, rehearsals for Rio's the parade are hotting up under the watchful eye of HELINHO DE OLIVEREIRA, president of the School of Samba. The city, one hour away from Rio, has closed it's streets for the rehearsal and for those who can't make it to Rio for the big day, this becomes their special preview. The atmosphere is electric and everyone is welcomed to participate - young and old. Even though only a few of the dancers are wearing their costumes, it still feels like Carnival. Everyone is striving for perfection, and in Rio as well, the grand floats and dazzling costumes are getting their final touches. The costumes alone require four thousand rolls of sequins and glitter. In massive warehouses work on the flamboyant floats has been going on since last April. Each float here has 8 hundred kilos of iron and one thousand two hundred kilos of welded metal. The first Brazilian carnival dates from 1641, when a party was set up to celebrate the coronation of Portuguese King D. Joao VI. Nowadays Carnival is one of the biggest parties in the world attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists.
