TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is a set of communication protocols that form the foundation of the modern internet and most computer networks. Developed in the 1970s and 1980s, TCP/IP provides a standardized framework for devices to communicate and exchange data over networks, enabling seamless and reliable data transmission across different types of hardware and software. TCP/IP is comprised of two main protocols: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP): TCP ensures reliable, ordered, and error-checked delivery of data between devices. It breaks down data into packets, which are small units of information, and assigns sequence numbers to each packet. This allows the recipient to reassemble the packets in the correct order and request retransmission of any lost or corrupted packets. It assigns unique IP addresses to devices connected to a network and provides a way for routers to determine the best path for data to travel between source and destination. IP comes in two main versions: IPv4 (32-bit addresses) and IPv6 (128-bit addresses), with IPv6 designed to address the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses due to the growth of the internet. TCP/IP operates using a layered architecture, with each layer handling specific functions. These layers include the application layer (e.g., web browsers), transport layer (e.g., TCP), network layer (e.g., IP), and link layer (e.g., Ethernet). This modular approach allows for interoperability between different hardware and software implementations. TCP/IP is integral to the operation of the internet, connecting devices, servers, and services worldwide. It enables diverse applications and services, from simple web browsing to complex cloud computing, by providing a standardized and reliable method for data exchange.
