In a breakthrough for cold case investigators, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has identified human remains discovered nearly 29 years ago as those of Betty Jean Benton, solving one piece of a decades-old homicide mystery. The skeletal remains were discovered on July 18, 1996, in a wooded area near Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. At the time, medical examiners determined the remains belonged to a female victim and death was ruled a homicide. Despite initial investigative efforts, the victim's identity remained unknown for decades. In 2022, the remains were sent to Raleigh for examination by a forensic anthropologist. With financial support from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Foundation, bones were subsequently forwarded to a lab in Texas for specialized DNA testing. The first attempt at DNA extraction was unsuccessful due to the degraded condition of the remains. In 2024, the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office submitted additional bone samples to the lab. This second attempt helped investigators upload her genetic profile to genealogy databases. The team quickly identified the victim as Betty Benton: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/loc...
