In this episode, I dive into the surprising connection between hot flashes and heart health. Often seen as an unavoidable symptom of menopause, hot flashes might actually serve as early indicators of cardiovascular risk. I’ll take you through the historical context of how hot flashes were perceived and treated—starting from being dismissed as hysteria to the introduction of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Recent research, including findings from the SWAN study and the Women's Health Initiative, shows that severe hot flashes are linked to higher risks of cardiovascular disease, endothelial dysfunction, and even increased mortality. These studies suggest that hot flashes could be a biological alarm bell for underlying heart issues. I’ll also discuss the characteristics of severe hot flashes, such as intense heat episodes lasting one to five minutes, often accompanied by a rapid heart rate, sweating, and anxiety. Episodes are considered severe if they happen frequently or disrupt daily activities and sleep. To help you understand and manage these risks, I recommend discussing specific tests with your doctor, like a lipid panel, high-sensitivity CRP, apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein A, oxidized LDL, and myeloperoxidase. These tests can provide deeper insights into your cardiovascular health. In summary, severe hot flashes are more than just a menopausal inconvenience—they could be important indicators of cardiovascular health issues.
