In Seoul 1988, Bubka had his first opportunity to shine in the Olympic Games, having stayed out of Los Angeles four years earlier due to the Soviet Union boycott. Representing the USSR in Seoul, Sergey Bubka broke the Olympic record with a 5.90m mark which also gave him the Olympic gold medal. His fellow Soviets Rodion Gataullin and Grigoriy Yegorov join him on the podium. Bubka would still compete in the Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He is currently a member of the International Olympic Committee.
