Painting with Gesso

Demonstration of non-traditional methods of painting with Gesso. Traditionally, Gesso is used as a primer and protective ground on canvas. Gesso can also be used with charcoal pencil to lay out the composition of a painting and adjust areas as necessary. It can be utilized to obscure writing and underlayers of painting often called Palimpsest. Textural layers of Gesso can be applied with a palette knife, squeeze bottle, and with stencils. Once Gesso has dried, dimensional applications can be painted over and removed with a paper towel to reveal layers. Who knew you could do so much with Gesso!
