'A Song in Praise of Sonoma Mountain' is the song I chose to start my record, because it centers it on the core intention of this project--to create music about connection to place. For me, Sonoma Mountain is where the world begins. It's where I live and work on a ranch, and it's where I made this record. I included field recordings in the track, of birds, frogs, and wind from the mountain itself, because in my mind all of these elements are their own songs in praise of the mountain. The mountain is at one time seen as an entity within itself worthy of praise, but simultaneously made up of the things that are praising it. Recorded in a 100-year-old sheep barn, Ismay’s first full-length album Songs of Sonoma Mountain explores the mystical of modern life in the rural American West. The songs tell stories from the perspective of the mountain, the animals upon it, and Ismay themself to examine gender identity, loss, and a search for belonging. This album seeks to immerse listener into the world of Sonoma Mountain, and bring about the sense that we aren’t as separate from nature as we may think. Co-produced by Robert Cheek (Engineer Band of Horses, Chelsea Wolfe) and Avery Hellman, the two collaborated to emphasize live, vulnerable performances bringing out the character of the space. The recordings interweave field recordings with intricate songwriting and experimental production. This album will be released alongside the first season of Ismay’s podcast, Where the World Begins in March 2020.
