PLANE WATER Air and water — together they cover the globe. For many pilots, these classic elements are unique and incompatible, but for those who have learnt to fly on floats, one provides an ethereal transition from one to the other. For many float flying is as good as it gets. Although now quite rare, there are still a few airlines in the world operating scheduled seaplane services. Throughout most of aviation history, water flying was seldom done for pleasure. Bush pilots used lakes as the only tree-free landing sites from which they could provision camps or fly in help to those in need. Lakes and rivers were the airports of the outback, and floats were the landing gear. The advent of the ultralight floatplane has brought about a great increase in another sort of flyer - the pleasure seeker. It is an unusual kind of flying with its own difficulties and dangers, but at the same time it offers unparalleled freedom. You don't need airstrips - a float plane can take a tourist or a prospector into an untouched area and leave it again without leaving a trace.
