Composed by Nobuo Uematsu Lyrics by Tetsuya Nomura Translated into Latin by Taro Yamashita Arranged by Ninian Sword Video Editor: Dave Hall The Lifestream is the river of life that circles the planet, giving life to the world. The Shinra Electric Power Company used the Lifestream as an energy source, not caring that it was harming the planet. They also performed experiments on people. One of these men, Sephiroth, found out about the experiments that had been done to him. In his anger and hatred, Sephiroth wanted to destroy everything. When the hero, Cloud, and his friends failed to stop Sephiroth from summoning a giant meteor to destroy the entire planet, the planet itself used the Lifestream as a weapon to stop everything. Two years after these events in Final Fantasy VII, the planet is still angry. The movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children begins here, as a plague called Geostigma affects many, including the hero Cloud and a boy named Denzel, an orphan in the care of Cloud and his childhood friend, Tifa. Geostigma has no known cure. The Promised Land is an a cappella choir piece with Latin lyrics that ask, “why?” Why are we being punished? But also, why are we begging for forgiveness when the planet clearly did not forgive us for what we did to it? This song takes inspiration from Gregorian Chant in the opening lines, before expanding out into the polyphony of later church music. It is both a lament and an expression of resignation for the way things are. You can also hear this theme referenced in the song “The Promised Land - Cycle of Souls” from Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020). Lyrics: Cur in gremio haeremus? Cur poenam cordi parvo damus? Stella nobis non concessit Venarum pulsus in terram fluens Parvus pulsus Cor mortem ducens Vita mollis in stellam redeunt Animam sacrificare necesse est? Cur in gremio haeremus? Cur veniam petimus In terra fatali? Translation: Why do we cling together? Why do we give punishment to lesser hearts? The Planet did not forgive us The pulse of veins flows through the earth A faint, faint pulse Of a heart drawn to death A gentle life returns to the planet Is it necessary to sacrifice souls? Why do we cling together? Why do we beg for forgiveness In the Promised Land? #njgso #vgm #orchestra #finalfantasy7remake #adventchildren
