Toxic Slime (Considered Harmful) is a game in the style of Quicksilva's Mined Out. It runs on a 48K Oric Atmos and was written by Alexios Chouchoulas in 1995. The game was self-published as a homebrew. The game is notable for being one of the earliest examples of using C on an Oric, the game being coded in a combination of C and assembler. It is best described as an action-puzzler. The game is turn based, so you have plenty of time to plot your next move. The games plot involves you, as an environmental activist, trying to shut down factories producing toxic slime. All you have to do is go in through the front door of each factory and it will be destroyed, scattering debris and collectibles around. Destroy all the factories and you can escape off the top of the screen to the next level. A bonus timer counts down, and its value is awarded to your score if you complete the level. Making your task harder is the abundance of toxic slime that is present in the environment. This is deadly to the touch. Ironically one of the largest sources is the trail of footprints you leave behind - I guess you have got it all over your boots from destroying other factories. When you destroy a factory, it is replaced by a debris field of bricks, deadly slime and objects you can interact with. The bricks block your path, but are harmless, but the slime will kill you if you touch it. The collectibles have various effects depending on what they are: Barrels: These round barrels of slime are very common. Touching one sprays slime all around the screen, which can be a problem as you may well find your path blocked and that will cost you a life. You don't get any points directly for barrels, but they add 250 points to the bonus. You need to balance risk and reward when deciding whether to touch these. Boxes: Worth 200 points, they also add 10 points to the bonus. Lightning Bolts: These will destroy, randomly, significant amounts of slime on screen. They can get you out of trouble, with a bit of luck. They are worth 500 points. Plus Signs: Not worth any points, but they add 1,000 points to the bonus. Extra lives: If the Bonus counter goes over a certain value (I think it is 4,000 points) it resets to zero, but you gain an extra life. The factories all have a number above the door. On Easy difficulty, this plays no part in the the game, but on the Hard difficulty, you must visit each factory in numerical order. This can be very difficult to do when you have the maximum of nine factories on screen! The game starts with an open playfield, but once you have cleared a screen with nine factories, additional walls are added to the screen, making your movements even harder. This is a surprisingly addictive game for the Oric, one of those 'just one more go' games. The gameplay and graphics are simple, but very well done for their purpose - the slime shimmers and I love the little animations on the smokestacks of the factories. The need for sound is also limited in a game like this but what we have fits suitably. Each level also has a witty, sometimes helpful, comment at the beginning and the game has a good sense of humour. The entertainment value of this type of game is always dependent on the gameplay mechanics, and this game succeeds well at this. If you only ever try out a few games on the Oric, this 30-year-old puzzle game should be on your list. This run was made on the 11th January 2026 using the Oricutron emulator on PC. The skill level selected was 'Hard', in this mode the factories have to be visited in numerical order. The final score was 38,512 points. Time stamps: 00:30 Title screen.
