(30 Oct 2017) The announcement by Kenya's election commission that President Uhuru Kenyatta won last week's re-run election immediately sparked demonstrations in opposition stronghold Kisumu. Scores of demonstrators danced around burning tyres as night fell in the western city which overwhelmingly voted for opposition leader Raila Ondinga in the first round. The announcement that Kenyatta was the winner by a huge margin was expected because he faced no significant challenge after Odinga refused to participate, saying the election was a sham. Demonstrators chanted "Kisumu is not a part of Kenya'," in the city, Kenya's third largest, where secessionist sentiment is growing after decades of perceived economic and social injutices. Wafula Chebukati, the election commission chief, said on Monday that Kenyatta got 7.5 million votes, or 98 percent of the votes that were cast. Kenyatta was also declared the winner of a presidential vote in August, but that election was later nullified by the Supreme Court.
