Eighteen A-10 attack planes set off from the UK during Operation Epic Fury in the Middle East. The iconic 'Warthog' or 'tank buster' drew large crowds of plane spotters. Twelve of the type diverted back in due to what appeared to be a delay with their route over Europe. Aircraft have come from the 124th Fighter Wing at Gowen Field, Idaho Air National Guard and the 127th Wing at Selfridge, Michigan Air National Guard. They are likely deploying to a base in the Middle East where they will then be armed with weapons to provide close air support to ground forces. The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II went into service in 1977 with the US Air Force and is named after the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II. The attack plane is unique in its design as it is built around the 30 mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary auto-cannon seen on the front, creating the iconic 'BRRRT' sound. The type is designed to engage armored vehicles such as battle tanks, and is well armored in itself. The type is expected to be retired in 2026 with many aircraft already having been withdrawn from service. The current conflict may affect this retirement. Protests were also visible at RAF Lakenheath with multiple banners on display and stalls erected. There is an increased presence of police and security forces around the base.
