Iranian women burn their headscarves in surging protests over hijab laws

Women in Iran have burned their headscarves as protests raged for a fifth straight night across the country following the death in custody of a woman detained under hijab laws. Demonstrations have erupted across Iran over the treatment of Mahsa Amini, who last week died after collapsing at a detention centre in Tehran and falling into a coma. Ms Amini was arrested by Iran' morality police and accused of breaking a law that requires women to cover their hair with a hijab, and to cover up their arms and legs. Ms Amini died in hospital after being in a critical condition for three days. The UN's acting high commissioner for human rights, Nada al-Nashif, said there were reports that officers beat Ms Amini around the head with a baton and shoved her head against a police vehicle.
