Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School took on a new challenge this year, the "Great Kindness Challenge." "We tried to do acts of everyday things like just recycling, being nice, and saying compliments to someone to make their day better." ...and because Sherwood Middle chose to be kind, the "Kindness Matters Bus" took a special stop out of their nationwide tour to visit this East Baton Rouge Parish School "We want them to be kind to each other. We want them to make Baton Rouge a kinder place. We don't want kids to feel uncomfortable at school. We want them to feel welcome and feel like their a part of the whole-school community, no matter who they are or where they're from." ...but the daily acts of kindness shown by students and faculty don't just stay within school walls. The S.M.A.M.S. Falcons donated coins and painted "peace rocks" to help build a playground in Texas for a community impacted by Hurricane Harvey. "Baton Rouge is in a position to understand what's going on or what happened in Texas with the flooding. So for our kids to be able to contribute in this way, even just to put a little piece of themselves onto those rocks and to put it into the playground, or on the playground, makes them feel like they're part of the rebuilding process." "Not only does it spread awareness throughout the us, its through all over, but it creates Kindness consciousness, and that's so important in today's day and age. We need more kindness, simple as that." "It makes them happier, because they can get the materials that they might need so they can have more fun at school, and that's important." "Especially since they were one of the schools affected by the flood." "It feels really good because you're contributing to someone else's happiness."
