Lake District UK | Mountain walk on Helm Crag | 4K walking tour

A walk in the Lake District UK from the village of Grasmere to the mountain Helm Crag to enjoy some spectacular scenery. Helm Crag is relatively small by Lakeland fell standards. At 405 metres (1330 feet), it is a walk that many will undertake in less than an hour. Having said that, it's quite steep and rocky in parts and some scrambling is necessary. The views on top are worth the effort! Starting in the lovely little village of Grasmere we walk up the Easedale Road towards Lancrigg Hotel, through the grounds and into the woodland. Here we come across some ferns and pines which lend an almost Jurassic feel to the forest. On to the lower slopes of the fell and up the path we go, mostly steps all the way, though steep and uneven in many parts. It's worth stopping every so often for a breather, and to admire the views. The final section of the climb is the hardest, and then we are on the top. It's long and fairly flat, strewn with boulders. One outcrop, visible from Grasmere below, is named the Lion and the Lamb. Certainly from one angle there is a distinct Sphinx like appearance to the large formation. For me, the smaller one is a shapeless blob! And finally, the large outcrop and highest point, known as the howitzer, and the resemblance to an artillery piece is plain to see. From the long, flat summit we can see all around - Grasmere the village and the water down below, the A591 snaking through the valley, and many of the Central Fells all around.
