I will read a short prompt from my writing workshop and show you the problems I often see: missing capital letters, wrong verb tenses, missing articles, sentences that are too long, and more. I also show you how fun writing can be when you use journal prompts. Instead of boring topics, I ask you to write about interesting things, like something strange that happened to you. When you join my writing workshop, you write your journal prompts, email them to me, and I correct them for you. This is the best way to improve your English writing fast. https://www.engvid.com/english-for-be... ✍️ Join my writing workshop here: https://www.engvid.com/to/ronniewriting In this lesson: 0:00 English Writing for Beginners 2:03 Writing Passage with Mistakes 3:48 Writing Passage Corrections Transcript: Hi. Do you need help with your writing? So this is a big problem in English. You can maybe speak well or not, you can understand grammar, your listening's really good, but oh my god, writing. Writing's difficult in English because you have to really pay attention to all the rules. Hate rules. Whether you're writing for your IELTS test, or your CELPIC test, or essays for school, it can get boring and you don't want to practice writing essays, god. I have the solution. So, I have a writing workshop where I send you fun things to write about. These are called journal prompts or writing prompts. It just means ideas. So I give you an idea and you write it. Oh, cool. And don't worry, it's not boring. It's not like, "Talk about your last summer vacation." It's fun things. The writing prompt that I chose today was "something strange that happened to you", which I'm sure you have tons of those. So in my writing workshop, you are going to write your prompts, you send them back to me via email, and I correct them. Wow. That's the hardest part. You can write, and write, and write, but you always need someone to correct you, and that's where the teachers come in. So, the details are on the website. Jump on there, sign up for the course, and I'll help you through writing, and make it not boring. Yes. So let's go with the first thing that I've chosen. So, the writing prompt, as I said, was "something strange that happened to you". Now, I'm making this really short and sweet just so you can see the major errors that I see with my students' writing. So let's read it, and tell me if you can find the errors. Okay? "Yesterday, I was at park. Five girls start talking with me. I offer them some chickens. Nobody takes one piece of chicken, except for one girl. She tooks five pieces. True story. Let me go back. I was sitting at the park, having a lovely picnic with a box of Jollibee chicken." Jollibee chicken's amazing, by the way. Delicious. "And a girl comes up, and she says, 'Oh, hey, can I pet your dog?' 'Sure.' My friend, being the super nice guy that he is, says, 'Hey...' or no, she said, 'Hey, you guys have got Jollibee chicken. Enjoy.' And she leaves. My friend's like, 'Hey, do you want some chicken?' 'No.' Most people would go, 'Oh, no, no, no, thank you, thank you. We want the chicken, but we would never take it.' She, God bless her, on the other hand, comes like, 'I would love some chicken.' So, she dips her hand in the bucket, takes out a piece, and she says, 'I'm going to take two pieces.' Wow. Bold move, girl. Love it. So she takes two pieces of chicken, and saunters off. That means she ran away. She was the happiest girl in the park because someone gave her chicken. It was funny, but the point is, I don't know, we just don't do that. If someone offers you chicken, which is weird, and you really want it, and you're like, 'No, no thanks', maybe because we're Canadian, but to take two pieces, wow, that's where the funny thing comes in. So, now that you've had time to think about these sentences, let's go through and correct them. First, and most important thing, and I have to tell people time and time again is as soon as you start a sentence, you have to use a capital or a big letter. So, every start of a sentence must have a capital letter. So, yesterday... Uh-oh. "I". Now, I don't know why, but in a sentence, "I" must also always be capitalized. I guess it's like, I'm super important, so I get to be a capital, so yesterday I was at park. So, for this one, we would have to use an article. We can say, "I was at a park." Five girls start talking with me, whew. This is an example of a sentence that's too long. […]
