This is a hidden game mechanic in Shaolin, hinted at but mostly kept a secret in the manual. Chances are, if you've seen Alex (or ALEX, as he's called in the game), it's been because you've beaten the game's six story modes, and happened to see him in your unlocked characters. Conspicuously, he appears right after the final two iterations of Jun in the Character Select, which is a good enough hint as to who Alex really is. So how do you play as him? Firstly, you can't allow yourself to hit Level 100, but you must age to the point where you become "Old Jun" (either form), and no more bandits appear. Then, you must allow your Endurance to drain to zero, after which you talk to the gatekeeper (if there is one). He'll ask you if you've visited the stranger that just entered town. Alex's location varies depending on the story mode (because you're in different towns). As each story has a different Jun, each story also has a different Alex. What I mean to say is, Alex's story changes, even if he looks the same. Universal to all versions of Alex is the fact that he wishes to inherit your responsibilities and skills, carrying on your journey for whatever reason. Should you accept, Jun disappears forever, and you now play as Alex until the end of the story. Nothing about you changes, really. People treat you the exact same way as they treated Jun, but they call you ALEX instead. Although they didn't really do much with this mechanic other than restoring your age and allowing you to level up against bandits again, there is an interesting change if you've already beaten the Shaolin Shrine challenges. If you return as Alex, the innkeeper won't recognize you, but upon talking to him three times, he'll acknowledge that Jun mentioned you as his replacement. As for what happens to Jun? Like I said, he disappears forever. However, we can assume that he inherited the inn, as the innkeeper (who's your father/grandfather/mentor depending on the story) is deceased by this point.
