A photo gallery of Holocaust (Shoah) survivor and Schindler Jew Itzhak Stern. History Biography: Itzhak Stern was born on 25th January 1901 in Kraków, Poland to parents Menachem Mendal Stern and Pearla Reizel Stern. In 1938 he was engaged to Sophia Backenrot but the marraige had to be postponed until after the war (World War II) which was triggered on 1st September 1939 with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. During World War II the Nazis set the Jews and other groups the Nazis deemed "undesirable" from the rest of society and proceeded with the Holocaust (Shoah) - the genocide of six million or more European Jews orchestrated by Nazi Germany during World War II. When the Nazis came to Kraków, as well as in other occupied territories and locations, they took over Jewish businesses and acquired the rights retaining Jewish workers as slave labour. Two months later in November 1939 one of these companies for where Stern worked was acquired by a German named Oskar Schindler. Stern would later be an assistant to Schindler in his humanitarian efforts and heroic actions of rescuing 1200 Jews from death in the Holocaust. Stern was also rescued by Oskar Schindler from the Plasźow labour camp and was transported to the safety of Brünnlitz in 1944 when the SS had started closing down the concentration camp and deporting the remaining prisoners westward. After the war and the camp was liberated Stern moved to Paris, France where Schindler had visited him and then eventually emigrated to Israel where he passed away in Tel-Aviv Yofo in 1969. It was reported that Schindler "cried inconsolably" at his funeral.
