What's the true value of seafood to Cornwall?

For the first time in 20 years, we have the evidence to prove the true value of seafood to Cornwall. The seafood sector is four times more important to Cornwall’s economy than it is to the UK’s. Overall, Cornwall’s seafood sector contributes £174 million to the county’s total GVA. It employs around 8 thousand people across the county which means for every fisherman at sea there are 15 more jobs on shore. Fishing, tourism and hospitality combined make it the UK’s flagship for seafood economy. The remarkable results of this research underpin the objectives of the Cornish Fishing Strategy (2021) and demonstrate how integral the seafood sector is to the Cornish economy, employment and food security. These outstanding findings will better inform regional and national decision-making and help drive strategic investment into Cornwall’s seafood sector.
