Unwanted pregnancies and complications can be avoided with laparoscopic sterilisation or tubal ligation. In this procedure, as HexaHealth expert Dr. Deepti Agarwal explains, two falope rings are placed in each of the fallopian tubes in the woman’s body to prevent chances of pregnancy. The tubes are basically clipped to avoid conception. It can be either a laparoscopy or the traditional laparotomy. Anyone who is above 35 years of age or has given birth to a child 4-5 years back can opt for laparoscopic sterilisation. But there is a pre-requisite – the haemoglobin levels of the female should be at least 9. Laparoscopic sterilisation is preferred as it is a day-care procedure, usually completed in 16-18 hours. The patient needs to get admitted on the day of the surgery, a small anaesthesia is given in the form of IV sedation. This process takes just 15-20 minutes. Discharge can be done by the evening. It’s a relatively easy procedure - only 2 holes of 2-3 cm each need to be made – and has a high recovery rate. Not many precautions need to be taken post-surgery either and routine tasks can mostly be started the next day after the surgery. But it should be done only after the patient gets her menstrual cycle - any day between Day 3 and Day 7/8. There is only a 0.1% chance of failure. The good news is that it can also be reversed laparoscopically. The two falope rings are removed and a dye is inserted to check if the tubes are fine. The patient can then go in for infertility or ERT help and conceive. However, in case you’ve undergone a laparotomy, it is difficult to reverse since the tubes are ligated – there is a suture put over the tube. Dr. Agarwal also shares how she has worked in Sikar, Rajasthan where a government scheme called Bhamasa is in place under which she has herself done close to 400 laparoscopic sterilisation procedures. At HexaHealth, we believe in simplifying surgery. Our mission is to provide hassle-free experiences for over 10,000+ patients by connecting them with top hospitals and surgeons at the best rates.
