Recently, we received a note from one of our kind supporters asking a question regarding Bibles in China: “The other day I was in Barns and Noble bookstore. I looked at a NLT Bible by Tyndale and saw that it was printed in China. I was surprised since the country is against Christianity. Maybe Bibles are being secretly sent out there or is China just profiting from Christianity.” So many honest Christians, like the one who wrote this letter, are confused. Aren’t Bibles illegal in China? If so, then why is my Bible made in China? There are many Christian organizations that would answer this by saying that Bibles are not illegal in China, but in fact, there is no need for Bibles inside China at all. One of the largest Christian outlets recently reported, “First, legal Bibles are not in short supply. The Red Guards confiscated Bibles so that after the Cultural Revolution, the most pressing need of Christians in China was for Bibles. A decade of illegal Bible smuggling met part of the need, but it put Christians in the difficult position of supporting an illegal activity. After three years of negotiations, the Amity Press was able to begin printing Bibles legally. The printing plant I visited has printed almost 30 million copies since 1986.” To add to this confusion, five years ago in 2019, Amity International in China announced that they had just printed a world record of 200 million Bibles. How does a country with 200 million Bibles possibly need more? The truth is, China is the largest Bible printer in the world and China does not have enough Bibles.
