This video shows the largest cities in Alabama over time, ranked by population. This is the first state alphabetically in the United States. I intend to do Alaska next. Data source: 1790-1850: Accredited or reputed estimations or Census data where available. 1850-2020: U.S. Decennial Census Data. Music: Scott Buckley - 'Ascension' https://www.scottbuckley.com.au/libra... Questions: Why does Huntsville grow before the Space Race begins? -The data source is the U.S. Decennial Census data. This is a census conducted each decade, like the most recent one in 2020. As a result, if an event happens in the beginning of a decade, it will have an impact on the next decades data. Consequently, the data is as accurate as decennially--by decade. The rest of the years use a simple smoothing growth. Why does it end at 2020? -The data source is again, the U.S. Decennial Census data. The most recent Census was conducted in 2020. What's going on between 1840 and 1850? -This is a result of the smoothing of decades. The growth is linear between decades, and as a result, new towns and cities appear then grow linearly to their next data point. No, all of these towns weren't founded on exactly 1840, but 1850 is when they began tracking via the Census. Timeline of the Most Populous City: 0:00 - Mobile, AL 2:04 - Birmingham, AL 5:53 - Huntsville, AL Visualization made with Flourish Studio. #alabama #population #datavisualization
