Mid-Hants Railway 'GREAT SPRING STEAM GALA' - 2014

The Mid-Hants Railway made preservation history at its 'GREAT SPRING STEAM GALA' over the weekend of March 7th-9th 2014 when it played host to a locomotive that up until now has only worked excursions on the National Network (mainly 'VSOE LUNCHEON SPECIALS' but occasionally other excursions like the 'CATHEDRAL'S EXPRESS'): BR(S) rebuilt 'Merchant Navy'-class 4-6-2 No.35028 "Clan Line". It arrived on Thursday 6th March in the company of smaller cousin SR rebuilt 'West Country'-class 4-6-2 No.34046 "Braunton" that had traveled from Southall Depot to Stewart's Lane Depot before the two ran down to Guildford and then reversing round to Alton. "Braunton" was making a return visit (following its previous visit for the 'AUTUMN STEAM SPECTACULAR' in October 2013) as was the third visitor - Metropolitan E-class 0-4-4T No.1 which last visited at the 2009 'Spring Steam Gala'. The Met-tank was deployed on shuttles between Ropley & Alresford using the railway's 'Hampshire Unit' DEMU. The full locomotive line-up was as follows... Metropolitan E-class 0-4-4T No.1 (visiting from the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre). BR(S) rebuilt 'Merchant Navy'-class 4-6-2 No.35028 "Clan Line" (from Stewart's Lane Depot). SR rebuilt 'West Country'-class 4-6-2 No.34046 "Braunton" (visiting from WCRC Southall). SR 'West Country'-class 4-6-2 No.34007 "Wadebridge". SR LN-class 'Lord Nelson' 4-6-0 No.E850 "Lord Nelson". SR V-class 'Schools' 4-4-0 No.925 "Cheltenham". SR U-class 2-6-0 No.31806 (making its final gala appearance before it leaves the Mid-Hants in the summer). BR 9F-class 2-10-0 No.92212 (making its first gala appearance following its return from the Bluebell Railway in late 2013). The gala was also meant to feature LMSR 'Black 5'-class 4-6-0 No.45379, but the loco was stranded at the East Lancashire Railway due to a mess-up with its booked transportation.
