The Elora Singers perform a beautiful setting of “Nunc dimittis” by esteemed Polish composer Paweł Łukaszewski. A leader in contemporary sacred choral music, Łukaszewski has been lauded for his expressive and distinctive voice, and his application of repeating and accumulating motifs. He’s been described as a successor to composers such as Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Krzysztof Penderecki, Arvo Pärt and John Tavener. In listening to “Nunc dimittis” it’s easy to hear why; the piece contains moments of sparse simplicity juxtaposed with lush and unexpected harmonic textures. The biblical text is taken from the Gospel of Luke, in which the Christ child is presented at the temple. The scene - in which Simeon prophesied the redemption of the world by Jesus - has inspired innumerable paintings and pieces of music. Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, Secundum verbum tuum in pace: Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum Quod parasti ante faciem ominum populorum: Lumen ad revelationem gentium, Et gloriam plebis tuae Israel. (Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, According to thy word in peace; Because my eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles And the glory of thy people Israel.)
