The Stone Forest (石林), located about 90 kilometers southeast of Kunming (昆明) in Yunnan Province (云南省), is one of China’s most iconic natural wonders — a surreal landscape where towering limestone pillars rise like petrified trees from the earth, forming a vast maze of stone. Shaped by millions of years of geological activity and erosion, this dramatic karst formation is often described as the “First Wonder of the World” (天下第一奇观) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you enter the Stone Forest Scenic Area, you’re immediately surrounded by jagged spires, narrow crevices, and towering stone “blades” that can reach up to 30 meters high. Walking through the forest feels like wandering through a natural labyrinth, where each turn reveals a new sculpture carved by wind, rain, and time — from sword-shaped peaks to formations resembling animals, pagodas, and even mythical creatures. The main section, called the Greater Stone Forest (大石林), offers panoramic viewpoints and wide paths that lead deep into the heart of the formation. Nearby is the Lesser Stone Forest (小石林), which is quieter and filled with more delicate and maze-like stone patterns. A particularly famous spot is the Ashima Rock (阿诗玛石), said to resemble a young Yi girl. According to local legend, Ashima turned to stone out of love and defiance, and today she remains a beloved symbol of the Yi people (彝族). The Stone Forest is not just a geological marvel — it’s also a cultural treasure. The area is home to the Sani people, a subgroup of the Yi ethnic minority, who have lived here for generations. Visitors can experience traditional Sani singing, dancing, embroidery, and vibrant festivals such as the Torch Festival (火把节), which lights up the Stone Forest each summer with bonfires, music, and celebration. The park is well-developed, with boardwalks, guided trails, and scenic platforms, but there are also quieter areas where you can get lost among the stones and feel the timeless silence of the landscape. Whether you're hiking through narrow stone corridors or standing at the top of a viewpoint looking over the forest’s peaks, the atmosphere is both otherworldly and peaceful. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon is ideal, when the crowds thin and the light casts long shadows across the stones, making the formations appear even more mysterious and dramatic. The Stone Forest (石林) is more than just a day trip from Kunming — it’s a place that invites wonder. Whether you come for its natural beauty, its cultural richness, or its sense of quiet grandeur, the Stone Forest leaves a powerful impression: of earth shaped into art, of legends written in stone, and of a landscape that feels at once ancient and alive. 🗺️Interactive map https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?... 🎬 Itinerary 00:00 Stone Forest (石林) 01:53 Stone Forest Scenery (石林风光) 03:50 Go to Jianfeng Pool (前往剑峰池) 08:10 Sword Peak Pool (剑峰池) 12:49 Go to Wangfeng Pavilion (前往望峰亭) 19:57 Wangfeng Pavilion (望峰亭) 22:39 Go to the depths of the stone forest (前往石林深处) 34:25 Deep in the Stone Forest (石林深处) 35:38 Leave Stone Forest (离开石林) 42:11 Go to Little Stone Forest (前往小石林) 46:13 Little Stone Forest (小石林) 49:11 Ashima (阿诗玛) 51:10 Leaving the small stone forest (离开小石林) Thanks for watching! 👨👩👧👦Community instagram: / wn.wang #kunming #yunnan #china 🎞️ Playlist 🇮🇳 India: • Duck Travel India | Bharat | भारत 🇸🇬 Singapore: • Duck Travel Singapore | 新加坡 | சிங்கப்...
