The majority of patients with neuroblastoma will eventually require surgery. These operations tend to be quite difficult because of the nature of these tumors, which often wrap themselves around delicate structures in the body. At The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, surgical oncologists aim to remove as much of the tumor as possible, while preserving all normal organ functioning. Because such a large number of children receive surgical cancer treatment at CHOP, our surgeons have been able to hone their skills in the most difficult tumor resections. For those patients who require complex surgeries, but are able to receive the rest of their cancer treatment locally, CHOP physicians will partner with the referring oncologist before, during and after surgery so the patients are able to spend most of their treatment time close to home.
