Offertoire pour le jour de Pâques by Alexandre Pierre François Boëly performed by Ben Bloor on the 45 stop 1954 Downes/Walker organ of the London Oratory Church on Thursday 11th February 2021. In terms of the surrounding musical landscape, A.P.F. Boëly (1785-1858) sits in the relatively barren period of French organ music between the French Classical School of Couperin, De Grigny and Clérambault, and the late-19th century revival that was kick-started by the revolutionary organ of Cavaillé-Coll. As both a composer and a performer, he was very much tied to the 'old school' and took a conservative approach to music-making, sometimes to the frustration and disapproval of his contemporaries and employers. This may be why his music is not so widely known in the current day, but the writing in this 'Offertoire' on the Easter hymn 'O filii et filiae' is full of dramatic tension and not a little virtuosity. It makes good use of the distinctive timbre of the increasingly outdated French Classical organ of his day, but in a style much less galant, and more appealingly rococo. Ben Bloor is Organist at the London Oratory Church and School Organist at Westminster School. For more information, please visit https://www.benbloor.com
