Inside the quiet village of Lastingham on the North York Moors stands one of England’s most remarkable historic churches — St Mary’s Church, Lastingham. Beneath this peaceful parish church lies a rare and extraordinary Norman crypt, built in 1078, and considered one of the oldest surviving Norman crypts in England. With its rounded apse, thick stone columns and complete underground nave, it is an architectural treasure hidden beneath the Yorkshire countryside. But the story begins even earlier. In AD 654, the Anglo-Saxon monk and bishop Cedd founded a monastery here in what was then remote wilderness. After his death in 664, he was buried on this site, making Lastingham an early Christian centre in Yorkshire. From a 7th-century Saxon monastery to a Norman Benedictine crypt, and through centuries of medieval and Victorian restoration, this church tells nearly 1,400 years of English Christian history. If you love English history, Anglo-Saxon England, Norman architecture, or hidden historic places in the UK and beyond then this is the channel for you. #Lastingham #NorthYorkshire #NormanCrypt #StCedd #AngloSaxonHistory #EnglishHistory #HistoricChurch #hauntsandjauntsadventures #NormanArchitecture #HiddenEngland 🌐 Follow me on social media: 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hauntsandja... 🎬TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hauntsandjaun... ☕️If you would like to support my adventures you can buy me a coffee here: https://buymeacoffee.com/Hauntsandjau... music by - I Walk With Ghosts' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au link to the church website - http://www.lastinghamfriends.com/home...
